Movix is a utility that creates a bootable multimedia display on a cd-rom. You throw a bunch of audio/video files in a directory, run a script, and out comes a .iso cd image that you can burn with any cd-writing application.
It uses isolinux to boot on any x86 PC, and mplayer to play whatever media files are on the disc (most types are supported). You also have the option of playing files on other devices, such as on the hard drive. It is read-only, so when it's done you go back to your OS.
To test, I ran the Movix Win32 installer on a machine at work. Stuck a couple of AVI's in C:\Temp and double-clicked the icon. A few seconds later the cd image was done, and I used EZ CD Creator to burn it.
After a reboot, the cd loaded, brought up a menu, and then I was watching videos of the Odyssey launch and the shuttle rocketcam.
This looks like a really good way to create static multimedia displays, and an example of innovative use of free software.
